Mediante este descubrimiento ser\u00e1 posible degradar las sustancias perfluoroalquiladas y polifluoroalquiladas (PFAS) a trav\u00e9s de un mecanismo que no consume mucha energ\u00eda.<\/p><p>Entre los proyectos globales de ALO, se desea promover por medio de la Antarctic Foundation (AAL) el desarrollo de t\u00e9cnicas para descomponer qu\u00edmicos eternos.<\/p><p>Los qu\u00edmicos eternos aparecen en muchas fuentes de agua, en todo el planeta. Estas sustancias son muy nocivas, porque causan diferentes problemas de salud. Entre ellos est\u00e1n el c\u00e1ncer, aumento del colesterol, infertilidad y da\u00f1an al sistema inmunitario. Hasta hace poco, los cient\u00edficos no hab\u00edan logrado romper las mol\u00e9culas de PFAS, porque estas ten\u00edan fort\u00edsimos enlace carbono-fl\u00faor. Sin embargo, el grupo de investigadores estadounidenses encontr\u00f3 una forma que permite degradar estos qu\u00edmicos. Para alcanzar esto lo que hicieron fue apuntar a \u00e1tomos de ox\u00edgeno que se ubicaban en la parte final de las mol\u00e9culas de PFAS. Con esta acci\u00f3n, las mol\u00e9culas expulsan \u00e1tomos de fl\u00faor que forman el fluoruro. Despu\u00e9s, los investigadores comprobaron que los subproductos que quedaban tras las reacciones qu\u00edmicas eran inofensivos.<\/p><p>El aporte de este grupo de investigadores ha sido muy bien recibido dentro de la comunidad cient\u00edfica internacional. Algunos consideraron que el descubrimiento permit\u00eda comprobar que los compuestos qu\u00edmicos eternos pod\u00edan degradarse, en determinadas condiciones, lo cual no hab\u00eda sido demostrado previamente.<\/p><p>En el mundo existen m\u00e1s de 12.000 variaciones de productos qu\u00edmicos PFAS. No es posible afirmar por ahora que la f\u00f3rmula aplicada por el grupo de investigadores para descomponer los 10 qu\u00edmicos eternos puede aplicarse al resto.
